Toronto Chapter updates: Reopening and going virtual

Hiya folks!

it's been a while! I thought I'd send out a quick update to share some of the stuff I've been working on, and answer some questions I've been getting. (Including this hopefully snazzy email template!)

🤔 What's going on with brevets?

The Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) has still cancelled all organized rides until further notice. These may be rescheduled at a later date depending on provincial and local health authority directives.

TL:DR; no brevets for you. We are keeping the registrations open in hopes that we can act quickly when we do get the go-ahead.

When we're able to offer organized rides, I expect that we'll still be spacing start times like we did last year. That means that if you wait until the last minute, you may need to start a bit later or a bit earlier than the scheduled time. (This is a total assumption, we've seen how quickly things can change!)

However, we have been notified by OCA that we can still offer our Permanents program for those looking to ride solo. If you're curious about permanents, please shoot me an email or check out our website!

Shoot me an email if there's a specific event (or series) that you're hoping to complete this year. When we're riding again, I'll try my best to accommodate it!

🤖 Trace Virtuelle

What started as a joke between a few board members, now is being offered as an alternative way to ride with others! We're not sure who would be interested in riding for 24h on an indoor bike, but who are we to say what counts as "fun" anymore?! 🤣

The Trace Virtuelle is a virtual ultra-endurance cycling event based off of the Trace Vélocio and is not an ACP approved Trace. The Trace Virtuelle has three main features:

Building a strong team spirit by training and riding together.
Each team member must complete at least 24 hours of riding together.
Teams will complete the ride together by participating remotely on their own virtual cycling platform of choice.

🚲 Upcoming Toronto rides

The Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) has still cancelled all organized rides until further notice. Registering for these future events does not mean that you'll be able to ride them.

You can request your own start time on the scheduled date and still receive ACP credit for each ride. Start times are limited to 5 riders each, so sign up early! Registration for Toronto rides close the Wednesday before the ride.

Sat June 19 04:59 – Kissing Bridge 300 (Summer equinox! Start and finish with the sun!)
Sat June 26 08:00 – Gentle Start 200
Sat July 11 05:00 – Concord Collingwood 400

Submit your brevet card and recorded activity (strava, ridewgps, garmin, etc.) to vp@randonneurs.to when you're done.

😷 Toronto Brevet rules

The usual:

Be a member of Randonneurs Ontario and have Ontario Cycling Association insurance.
Wear a helmet
Wear a reflective vest 1 hour before sunset, and 1 hour after sunrise.
Have front and rear lights solidly affixed to your bicycle.

The new:

Follow the Ontario, OCA, and regional guidelines for COVID-19.
Be more self-supporting than usual to minimize the need to visit stores for food or water. Carry a mask! You will need this to enter stores, and be respectful of their policies.
Ride only with others in your social circle. There's no "safe distance" when it comes to cycling.
Complete the brevet cards yourself (bring a pen!), and send me a .gpx recording of the ride when you've completed it!
