Toronto Chapter updates: Awards, ride sweeps, and a draft schedule!

Hiya folks!

Long time, no update. We're just on the edge of real winter here in Toronto, which is always an exciting time for me. We get to cozy up, put on a little winter weight, and dream about summers to come.

🏆 Awards

After a one-year hiatus, nominations for the Randonneur Ontario Awards are now open! This is a great opportunity to recognize others for their achievements over the past year. (Or burden them with a hilariously large trophy, depending on your perspective!)

Nominations will close on December 1, 2021, and winners are announced at our Awards dinners. (Details on that will be soon, I promise!)

Mike Barry/Jock Wadley Award

(Outstanding Rider)
Awarded to a club rider who is outstanding in one year or over several years.

Beryl Burton Award

(Best Female Rider)
Awarded to a club rider who is outstanding in one year or over several years, and has:
shown interest in the club and has provided support and assistance;
helped on rides or helped other riders.

Dan Herbert Award
Awarded to a member who has (in one or more years) benefited the club by mentoring one or more members (generally but not necessarily new).
Mentoring is to be defined as encouraging, educating and assisting riders to achieve their full potential as bike riders and Club members.

Coronation Cup

(Most Improved Rider)
Awarded to a club rider who has at least one previous year riding with the Randonneurs Ontario, and has:
shown consistency in appearing and in cycling; demonstrated improvement either in cumulative mileage ridden from the previous season or in brevet finishing times over the previous season.

Organiser of the Year
Awarded to that person who has:
provided support to the club's riding events in the year of the award or over several years; demonstrated care for the well-being of the club's riders; consistently took on the task of organising and supporting club rides.

Outstanding Performance on a Brevet
Awarded to the club rider who has demonstrated significant fortitude, courage, or generosity on a brevet ride and demonstrated physical or mental abilities beyond the usual in the conduct of a brevet ride.

Special Recognition Award
Awarded to a club rider who has completed a cycling event in the year of the award that merits commemoration.

Jim Griffin Rookie of the Year
Awarded to a club rider who has:
joined the Randonneurs Ontario in the year of the award or who rode their first brevet in the year of the award; shown ability in the year; shown interest in the club and in other club riders.

Half Wheel Award
Awarded to a club rider, who has consistently forced the pace of the group during brevet rides. (This trophy is literally half a bicycle wheel.)

🗓 2022 Randonneurs Ontario Draft Schedule

We've submitted our 2022 schedule to the ACP! While we're still working on the details for the OCA, you can see the draft schedule. Take a look-see, we got some pretty fun things coming up in the new year.

🚴 Ride leaders and sweeps

We had a great conversation during the AGM this year about the desire to have more social and supported rides, particularly in the Toronto Chapter. We took that feedback to heart and brainstormed a few ideas that allow folks to ride at their own pace, while also supporting folks that want a more social experience. Hence, leaders and sweeps!

Ride Leader

A rider that is pushing the peloton at the front. Encouraging and supporting folks that are looking for a more competitive ride.

Ride Sweep
A rider that is hosting the groupetto at the back. Supporting folks looking for a party pace while still staying within the time limits.

I'll let you know when there's a leader or a sweep on an event, but first, we'll need volunteers!
